It’s always nice to hear a compliment from someone, especially when it comes from someone you respect or like. You might feel awkward when someone gives you a compliment but there are ways to respond to people who give you compliments that are the best way to say thank you. Whether it’s something small like “you have a pretty smile” or something larger such as “you look great in that dress,” being able to respond in an appropriate way makes all the difference. It shows them that you appreciate what they said and not just hearing it and immediately putting yourself back into your shell again. The best way to say thank you is with action because words alone can feel empty sometimes. Here are some tips on how to respond if someone gives you a compliment so that it doesn’t go unnoticed.

Just Say Thank You (& Don’t Neglect to Show Your Gratitude)

First and foremost, just say thank you. Don’t pass it off as something you don’t care about, because you do. The small things in life are what matter the most and hearing that someone likes something about you is a great thing. If someone compliments you, then just say thank you and keep it moving. You don’t have to go overboard and have a 10-minute conversation about it, but you do have to show your gratitude. If someone compliments you, don’t just brush it off. Accept the compliment and show them that you care about it.

Surprise Them With Something Unexpected

If someone compliments you on something and you want to respond with an action, then surprise them with doing something unexpected. Maybe you know that they’ve been wanting to read a certain book for a long time now, or they are in need of a new pencil sharpener at school. Those are little things that you can do for someone just because they gave you a compliment. You don’t have to spend a lot of money or give them something that is expensive or even take them out to dinner. Just do something that shows that you appreciate what they said, and you are willing to take your gratitude a step further than just a “thank you.”

Show Them That You’re Not Just Hearing it and Shrugging it Off

When someone compliments you, they are doing so because they like something about you. They don’t want to insult you by saying something untrue because they know it to be true. So when you respond to a compliment with “thank you” and then continue your day, it shows the person that you are just hearing it and shrugging it off. Respond to compliments by showing the person that you are taking it to heart. If they say something about your smile, then thank them and show them that you are smiling more than usual because of what they said. You can do the same for other compliments as well. If someone tells you that you look nice or that you are smart, then show them that you care about their words and that you appreciate it.

Help Out the Person Who Gave You the Compliment

Some people are extremely selfless and don’t expect anything in return when they give you a compliment. They just want you to know that they see something great in you, even if you don’t. If a person compliments you and you want to respond by giving them something in return, then help them out. If they tell you that you are beautiful, then volunteer at a nursing home as a way of showing them that you care about their words. If someone compliments you on your intelligence, then help tutor a younger sibling or even a classmate who is struggling in school. Helping someone out shows them that you take what they said to heart, and you are willing to do something with it.

Conclusion

There are many ways to respond to people who give you compliments, but you have to be genuine. If someone tells you that you are smart, don’t respond by telling them that you are “not that smart.” That is not the right way to respond. Just say thank you, and if you want to take it a step further, then surprise them with doing something unexpected. If someone compliments you, take it as a compliment. Don’t brush it off, or pass it off as something that is less than what it is. Take it as a good thing, and show them that you care about it. Respond in a way that they won’t forget it because hearing others appreciate you is always a good thing.
