Resolution vs Refresh Rate in Gaming Monitors

When looking for the best monitor for a gaming computer, we always want to buy one with the shortest response time, highest refresh rate, and best image quality, but based on your budget, this isn’t always possible. Therefore, today we’ll tell you what’s better when it comes to the game, whether you should invest in more refreshment frequency or a higher resolution monitor.

Gamers are very demanding when it comes to the gaming experience and performance of their PC’, every gamer wants the best, but in most cases, they are working with a limited budget, and most of them can’t have both. Essentially, the deal is to have a gaming PC with a high resolution, high refresh rate, and low response time, but these monitors are usually too costly for many gamers and there are forced to choose resolution vs. the refresh rate.

Frames Per Second

Before we delve into the issue of gaming monitors, it’s important to understand what frames per second means. Also known as the FPS, it’s the manner in which movement is displayed on a computer screen. Frames are immobile images, which display information on a screen as a response to the input stimulus.

The output is usually displayed in an array of boxes, which move from one picture to another as fast as possible to offer a high-quality visual feedback experience. That seamless movement is the main reason FPS speed is crucial to gamers.

The Refresh Rate

To describe refresh rate in the simplest way possible, we shall define it as the exact number of times the screens information is updated each second. Unlike the FPS, the refresh frequency is usually determined by the screen, no matter the number of pictures it receives, because it has a maximum limit that can be displayed.

For instance, if your computer’s graphic card can generate 300 FPS in a video game, but the screen has a refresh rate of 60Hz, meaning it will only update 60 times every second and so, you can only see a maximum of 60 of the 300 generated frames every second. Therefore, to take full advantage of the higher FPS speeds, which contemporary graphics can generate, you need a screen with a high refresh rate. The good thing about a higher refresh frequency is that it provides you with great fluidity when enjoying your favorite games.

Monitor Resolutions

Monitor resolution can be described as the number of pixels. The resolution generated by your PC monitor is based on the number of individual pixels that are on your screen every second and this usually defines the quality and sharpness you can see on your screen.

When viewing a picture rendered at a 4K resolutions or 1080P resolution, the difference in image quality is obvious. This is because the 4K resolution (3840 x 2160 pixels) has over 8,294,400 color dots or pixels, whereas the 1080p resolution has 2,073,600 pixels. This makes the pictures clearer because the color point on an HD screen is often represented by one point, while on the 4K screens it’s represented by 4 points, allowing smoother color transitions and nuances.

What’s Better Between The Refresh Rate And Resolution?

Overall, you need to know the impact of both a higher refresh rate and higher resolution on the performance of your computer. With a high resolution, you’re forcing the graphics to get more pixels in every picture it generates. On the other hand, with regards to the refresh rate, you’re forcing the graphics card to generate more pictures every second.
